How I Built My Garage WorkBench

My garage is my sanctuary, some may find that statement a little sad but I’m sure a lot of guys will know exactly what I mean by that. Looking around my sanctuary last weekend I couldn’t help thinking something was missing.

Although I had a garage workbench in place, it was a little worse for wear. I decided it would be a good idea to rip that wobbly old bench down and construct a nice new one. Wider and more solid.

The idea was good but where shall I start? Maybe I’ll draw up some design plans and work along from there, I thought. That evening I took a quick look on the net for some ideas and stumbled across a site that had allsorts of woodworking blueprints in one place, garage workbench plans included.

Further investigation revealed just how detailed these plans were and for very little expense. The whole design was laid out step-by-step. Type of wood, cut sizes, hardware etc. Just a case of measure, cut and bolt together.

My usual method for such projects would be to buy some wood, place in a pile on the floor and cut and screw together until something resembling my head plan materialised.

This method usually resulted in lots of mistakes with measuring and cutting, therefore a whole lot of wasted wood, time and money.

My garage workbench project turned out to be one of the easiest things I’ve ever built and one of the best too. I will certainly be using this method for any woodworking projects I have in the future.

Plans give everybody the chance to build and achieve really professional results even if you have ten thumbs and no experience. If you’ve tried and failed in the past, as we all have, give this method a try. It worked great for me and I’m no master carpenter, believe me.

"To do", today: Make a list of items you want to accomplish each day, or week, and crossing each off as they are done. This not only serves to keep your routine in order, but it creates a sense of relief and relaxation, knowing you have one less thing to do, and more time to relax.

Great idea, it sure saves money. Also eliminates the middle man. Those architects and designers can get expensive. I've heard that some designers can charge up to ten dollars per square foot for simple drawings containing a floor plan and exterior elevations. Now that is a chunk of change. If you are going to do it for yourself, you're going to need to know how. Below are just some of the things needed to know to draw a simple ranch style home.

So what do you need to know to draw your own house plan?

1. You need to know how to lay out your Floor Plan. The floor plan is the template for your entire set of drawings. From the floor plan show where we want our electrical, tell how big our rooms are, note our window and door sizes, etc., so this is where we have to begin. Sure you could start with the exterior views but that would limit our interior of the home to what the outside looks like. Not a good idea! The house needs to be functional first and look pretty second out of necessity.

2. You need to understand the mechanics of a well designed kitchen. A kitchen is a place where the homemaker spends a majority of their time. It needs to be comfortable but functional. This area consists of a Sink area, Cooking area, & Food storage area. The best layout for a kitchen is one in which the least steps are taken to reach each appliance. This is called the working area or working triangle. A good working triangle doesn't exceed 12 to 14 feet all the way around.

3. The builder of the home would sure appreciate knowing where the walls, windows, & doors are located exactly. They would also like knowing door and window sizes, not to mention anything else special that is on the plan. That's where the dimensions and notes come in handy. You need to be able to create a dimensional string and groups of notes that are not confusing.

4. The Electrical Plan is very important to you as it gives you the opportunity to customize the home to your power and comfort needs! On the other hand, it is not always needed. What I mean by this is that any electrician who has taken a test for his or her license knows what is required electrical service by code. Chances are that they have already wired quite a few residences and barring any special needs or preferences can do the job without this plan. Always be aware though! Certain states require that you be a licensed Architect or Electrical Engineer to do Electrical plans. Be sure to check with your local building inspector to see what your limitations are! This will definitely save you some headaches down the road.

5. In standard construction, at least in the South Eastern United States, houses are built on Masonry Foundations or Basements. A foundation is the part of the home that anchors it to or keeps it from settling into the ground. This knowledge is a must in completing your plans.

6. What about how the exterior is going to look? It is no small matter if you are wanting to convey the idea of how the finished product is going to look when construction is complete. What is it going look like when its built? How to determine the best roof pitch, do we use brick, siding or rock?

7. Folks, I defiantly don't believe in mind reading! Neither does to typical contractor! If there is anything special you are wanting to build into your house, how is the builder to know unless you show them? You can make all the notes you want to on your plans and elevations but the message of how you want the house constructed may not always come across. That's why you need to understand how to draw details.

8. Then there is the task of finishing your drawings and not letting goofs and slip-ups get out the door. You need to understand the most common mistakes made by people who draw house plans so you can look out for them!

9. Last but not least in drawing your house plans is to know how to print them out and in what format and size.

How to repair cracks and defects on plaster work

Other defects may also be caused by movement of the building structure during settlement. This cracks appear on the wall surface of beams.

In plaster work repair, the materials to use have to be selected carefully. Correct mixes are then done after the selection. One part cement and three parts sand is mixed as mortar. This ensures that the bonding is adequate. The wall surfaces should be prepared. This is by thoroughly hacking to give a rough surface. Remedies to plaster work should not be done over previously painted or finished surfaces. The wall should be wetted before work commences.

The plaster work repair area is first identified. The surface to work on is added one feet extra. This will ensure a bigger area is done and smooth jointing to the existing surface. How to Build a Vegetable Greenhouse

No glazing is required, the lights being sent out complete and ready for erecting sectionally.

Several makes of the Dutch-light houses are supplied with a portable concrete base which may be laid directly on to the ground and the house erected over the base, there being no need for tedious brick laying. Or the house may he erected on old railway sleepers which, like the concrete blocks, may be moved about the garden if the house is being used to cover various crops growing in the open.

Be sure to use a chalk line to establish a straight guideline before cutting.

6.) Cut the bench supports from 2x12 lumber. Notch the decking to accept the bench supports. Be sure to toenail the backside of the seat support to the decking for added stability. Be sure the supports are square to the deck surface, then screw the 2x6 bench tops to the supports with 3-in. galvanized screws.

How to Remove Sweat Stains from Clothes

It’s just something that comes with Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) territory. If your sweating is bad, chances are you’ve got some stubborn sweat stains on your light clothing.

I remember when my armpit sweat stains were so bad, I was buying white tee shirts like they were disposables.

It definitely took a toll on my wallet at the time.

Maybe you know where I’m coming from?

You get those gross yellow stains on your underarms and normal bleach or detergent just can phase them out during a normal laundry cycle.

It’s true, most pit stains are just way to tenacious to go away with regular washing methods.

That’s probably why I’ve been getting so many requests from readers on how to remove sweat stains from clothes.

Well, you asked for it and YOU got it!

Here, I’ll be outlining the most effective ways to get your shirts looking like new again and save you some cash on your undershirt shopping list.

So, let’s get started with the first method and get those pit stains out!

1. Using the Right Detergents

Use liquid laundry detergent containing either oxygenated ingredients or ones that remove most protein-based stains and apply it directly to the sweat stains. Then, with your fingers, gently rub the detergent deep into the shirt fibers to cover the entire stain. Let it soak into the material for about half an hour. Wash in the laundry afterwards as you normally would.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide

This one is for white articles of clothing only. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down the protein residue in sweat stains. The results? Applying hydrogent peroxide on white clothing keep your garments from turning dark or yellowish over the armpit area over time.

Here’s what you do…

Soak the stain in a half and half mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide for half an hour. After that, wash it out with cool water and let your shirt air dry. If the stain is still visible, repeat the treatment with higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide.

I love this treatment because the hydrogent peroxide prevents that weird texture that sweat stains can give your clothing.

You know…

I’m talking about when sweat stains are so bad, the underarms of your tee shirts feel like construction paper - no good!

3. Baking Soda Paste

If you’ve been following my tips up to now, you’re probably sick of hearing me praise the power of baking soda! - hey what can I say? It’s the swiss army knife of sweat solutions!

Well, I have one more baking soda treatment for you - removing sweat stains. Yes, it works and yes, like most of this stuff, I’ve tested it out at home.

Here’s how to make baking soda eliminate your own sweat stains…

Mix a bit of baking soda with water until you have a thick paste. Then use a toothbrush to gently brush the paste into your clothing’s sweat stains.

Leave the paste saturating the stain for 20 minutes, then rinse it out with cold water and throw your garment into the laundry on a cold cycle with an oxygenating detergent.

Just a warning, sometimes the baking soda can leave a residue on clothing after the first cycle of washing so try to save this treatment for light clothing. It’s not that big a deal - sweat stains are usually more prevalent on light clothing anyway.

4. Sunshine and Spray

This one builds off of the original recommendation, choosing a detergent with oxygenated ingredients. Although, you can really add this extra step to whatever treatment you choose.

This solution does require a sunny day, so it’s not always an alternative. However, if the sun is cooperative, here’s what you do…

After applying your approved detergent (or hydrogen peroxide) to the sweat stains, lay your article of clothing out in the sun. You can hang it up outside as well.

Keep the stain wet by spraying it with water. As the moisture evaporates, the stain will evaporate with it. After 3 or 4 hours of leaving the garment out and spraying intermittently (yes, this is a little bit of a chore), throw the article of clothing in the laundry on a cold water cycle. Wash it out and wear your perfectly unstained outfit.

5. White Vinegar

White vinegar works wonders on colored articles of clothing. Really, it’s the first treatment you should try if you’re trying to remove sweat stains from anything other than white or off-white garments.

You want to create a solution of two cups of water and four tablespoons of white vinegar. Start with that. It’s diluted enough to protect colors and contentrated enough to go to work.

Apply the diluted white vinegar solution directly to sweat stains before washing in the laundry to kill all offensive sweat odor, prevent changes in the texture of your clothing due to sweat AND keep colors vibrant. (is this starting to sound like a “Cheer” commercial or what? ha.)

Residential windmills have received a lot of attention recently. The idea of powering one's home solely from wind power in intriguing and captivating. There are some drawbacks and challenges however. Wind turbines do not produce sound until the wind is moving fast enough (usually 6-10 mph) to turn the rotor. This means that the peace of a quiet summer morning will not be shattered by the sounds of a windmill.

Some people feel that windmills should be restricted to 100 feet high, unless an applicant can show that something higher is needed. They couldn't be louder than 65 decibels, as measured from the nearest property line.

Wind turbines have been popularized by those who live outside the range of local utility lines. And residential windmills have been used by those who wanted to live completely off the grid. Wind speed usually increases with height, so the taller the tower the better. A good rule of thumb is to erect it 20 feet above any nearby structures.

Residential windmill manufacturers, despite being noble planet-savers, have to make a buck to stay in business. In addition, they are also excellent for use in reclaiming otherwise unusable land. With this wide variety of applications and functions that they can provide at no additional fuel cost, windmill power is an excellent solution for say, a small farm that needs inexpensive electrical power. Wind turbines are good for the environment simply because they rely totally on the wind. That means no air pollutants or toxic gases are released into the atmosphere.

The How's and Why's of DIY Green Cleaning

We all have been hearing about the detriment to our bodies and our environment from the numerous chemicals in non-ecofriendly, household detergents and cleaners.

Key Laundry Detergent's Ingredients Toxic
On the website of Department of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their article dated 1999 titled “Key Characteristics of Laundry Detergent” they warn us that the key ingredients of most laundry detergents (with such innocuous names as, colorants, brighteners, surfactants, builders) are found to be toxic to humans and animals in a range of serious issues, including giving off hazardous gases, destroying and polluting eco-systems, and causing cancer.

I don’t know about you, but in my very busy family of teens and two working parents, we do a lot of laundry. Often these same chemicals and worse are in our cleaners, disinfectants, and dish washing detergents. This is why I choose green cleaning products.

Worst Offenders
Two of the worst toxins are phenol and formaldehyde found in many disinfectants and cleaners. (Formaldehyde, the same chemical used to preserve dead bodies.) According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental action group, “Formaldehyde is used in …some disinfectants, antibacterial soaps and even beauty products. Formaldehyde has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the EPA….Home exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to respiratory allergies in children.”

According to the Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) Guidelines for Phenol states that phenol is not a carcinogenic, but it did cause cancer in rats over a short span of time! Needless to say, I am livid, that sounds like a "carcinogenic substance" if you ask me! I am taking steps to clean-up (excuse the sad pun) my home from all of these poisons.

A Green Education
I have found a wonderful bounty of green-cleaning blogs and sites full of information and advice–kindred spirits to myself–growing together and spurring one another on in "Green-ness". Sometimes there is conflicting information around or worse yet "rumors" and also occasionally there has been controversy, even about some "green" manufacturers not truly being truthful in their labeling!!

I am seeking to be on top of ALL of this information as a wife, mom, homemaker, and environmentalist. I want to be "in the know" for my own life and I want to share that with you--to do my part in helping "green-up" the cleaning product industry. Our voice matters and each time you or I buy, we speak.

There are some great, green products out there on the market; now even finding their way into Mainstream Grocery Stores. I am reviewing them one-by-one, attempting to give you the good, the bad, and "the dirt" on them.

My Natural Cleaning Product Review Blog
The most important rule I've learned is: READ THE LABELS!
Read between-the-lines and know the terminology, so that you can know exactly what they mean. For example: "fragrance" usually means a synthetic fragrance, but "essential oil" means the real thing! Or "Natural" can actually refer to a "natural, but toxic" ingredient. I started this blog out of my own research as a concerned, eco-conscious consumer.

Sometimes I make my own detergent--and today I wanted to "review my own recipe". P.S. I'm not a supermom, I found that taking a couple hours every few months to whip up this "recipe" has been very easy.

My Own DIY Laundry Detergent
I combined a few of recipes found online that were simple –I like simple. Then off to the supermarket I went and purchased just a few household “normals” with which to mix my clothes detergent. What was on my list? White vinegar, baking soda, borax, washing soda, and good, old-fashioned soap:

Laundry Detergent

6 cups Baking Soda
3 cups Washing Soda*
3 cups Borax**
6 bars Soap (any kind, grated up)

*Washing Soda is sodium carbonate, a close cousin of Baking Soda, and is not edible or interchangeable, but it is an all-natural way to increase detergent’s cleaning power. It helps to get out ground-in dirt, stains, and grease.
**Borax, also is a natural detergent "booster".

I chop the soap with a large knife and grate it in my blender. You can use any kind of bar soap, I try to use only all-natural ones. They are a little pricier, but this recipe last for 3 months.

I measure all the ingredients and add everything in a large reusable plastic container with a lid. For a normal load of laundry I use 1/4 cup of the detergent.

Also, for those who like fragrance with their detergents, you can add a dropperful (30-40 drops) of essential oil of your choice to the detergent at the mixing stage. Some essential oils have been known to be natural disinfectants too, like lavender, tea tree, and thyme.

For Rinsing: I use 1/2 cup white vinegar in a blue "Downy" ball during the rinse cycle for "fabric softener". It also adds some disinfecting qualities to help rinse out remaining dirt or soap residue and many germs. You could also add the white vinegar to the rinse container in your washer.

Heinz company spokesperson, Michael Mullen, has referenced studies that show that a straight solution of 5% vinegar—the kind you can buy in the supermarket—kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of mold, and 80 % of germs (viruses) within 10 minutes.

This natural cleaning product combination of all-natural detergent and vinegar rinse has been working great on our laundry for our active family of four. I love the smell of clean and the satisfaction of doing it Green!

Wood and Concrete Stains Can Help Protect Your Flooring

Most homeowners use stains for decorative purposes. But you can also use these special products for protective purposes. After applying the colors on the flooring, let them dry for a few hours (assuming you use quick drying products) and then apply sealer. The sealer will help protect the surface and give the outer appearance a polished look.

But what happens when you fail to protect the materials properly? Let's look at concrete and wood, one at a time.

Concrete itself is a very tough and durable material. Under most circumstances, it can last for many years with little or no maintenance. But problems arise when tiny hair line cracks start to appear on the surface. These cracks can be caused by temperature changes or wear and tear (due to old age).

When such tiny cracks appear, they often go unnoticed. Dirt, grime and other contaminants will then enter the flooring through these cracks. In time to come, the cracks will start to widen, causing damage to the interiors of the flooring. Sometimes, even air can help accelerate the damage. Air or moisture can expand within the cracks and damage the concrete. The only way to prevent this from happening is to fix the cracks as early as possible. When you apply stains and then sealer on the flooring, you are actually repairing the cracks, whether you know it or not. The sealer adds an additional protective layer on the concrete, thus prolonging its life span.

Wood flooring is even more prone to damage. Most woods tend to rot after a period of time. When the materials age, the layer of lacquer on top, which also acts as a protective covering, erodes away. This leaves the wood exposed to external elements. Plants, dirt, and grime may start to accumulate on the flooring. Over time, the surface loses its shine. It's a clear sign to the homeowner that something must be done to renew the appearance and the protective layering.

The problem is, many homeowners tend to put off applying stains and sealer because the process can be time consuming and cumbersome. If the house is a big one, the process could take days! Imagine having to move the furniture from one room to another, just to work on the flooring. For each room, the wait could take up to 24 hours. So how long will the entire process take if there are many rooms in the house?

The key to this problem, is to use stains that are fast drying. Modern concrete and wood stains like Beer stains dry in a matter of hours. Once the colors dry, you can quickly apply sealer using a special spraying tool. After that, your job is done, and you can move on to the next room. The only thing I am unsure of with some of these DIY home energy jobs is the price of materials because most of these products claim two hundred dollars or less and your up and running but to me it seems like you would need a lot of used stuff in order to make that work for two hundred dollars or less.

Listed above is just a few reasons why I find getting your power through solar and wind energy is really beneficial as long as you get the right system for the job.

If the waste is to be taken outside then you need to drill a hole using a hole cutter attached to a drill bit which is the same diameter as the pipe going outside. If it is to be attached to the existing waste then you need a hole bore and the kit to make the connection to the existing waste pipe these can be obtained from the DIY store and are usually grey in colour. Connect up the waste pipes using pipe cement to weld the pipes together. Connecting the waste to the existing waste supply is easier than connecting it to an outside waste because unlike the one connection you make when connecting to an existing waste you have the extra work of running lengthy pipe work outside and possibly around corners. You can also position the waste in a standpipe with the hose just stuck into a stand alone pipe.

Whichever method you use, make sure that the pipes are securely fastened to the wall using pipe clips.Finally,fit the machines supply hoses to the back of the machine, open the shut off valves that open and close the water supply into the machine, making sure that all connections are secure and tight. Push the machine back into position, plug into electric supply and test

Americans have had a love-hate relationship with pigeons. While our fine-feathered friends carried thousands of messages that saved many hundreds of lives during World Wars I and II, they have also been a real foe for homeowners. The high concentration of uric acid found in pest pigeon droppings can discolor paint, stain wood, erode metal, and even crumble concrete and expensive stonework. Then there's the health risk of bacteria, fungi and parasites that live and grow in pigeon droppings, which can carry and transmit any of 60 known diseases. The fleas, mites and ticks in wild pigeons can also carry disease. All told, pest pigeon infestations cost homeowners millions of dollars annually.

While some homeowners have resorted to shotguns, poisons and lethal traps to pigeon proof their homes, there are many more humane ways of discouraging these pest birds from making your house their home.

One of the most popular pigeon proof deterrents is the bird spike. Particularly useful for awnings and patio covers, the bird spikes discourage birds from landing. Some spikes are made of rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate. Others have stainless steel spikes. They come in a variety of sizes, are easy to install and won't harm birds. They are ideal for discouraging pest pigeons from landing on ledges, parapets, beams, pipes, chimneys, cutouts, and light fixtures. Be sure to install a sufficient amount of pigeon proof spikes to cover an entire ledge (otherwise pigeons will get in behind it). Also, be sure to close off corners and all open sides of a ledge.

These angled slippery slopes are easy to install and ideal for ledges, eaves, beams and other 90-degree areas where pigeons tend to nest and roost. Pigeons simply can't get a grip and slide off the ledge. The Bird Slope presents an attractive bird-proofing alternative. The panels come in a two colors, gray or stone-or can be easily painted to match any home's décor. For wide ledges, the flat base simply glues to any clean surface. For narrow ledges, the slope can be trimmed down. Be sure to use UV stabilized Bird Slope panels, like those offered by Bird-B-Gone.

There are also a number of economical pigeon proof deterrents that have appealed to homeowners. These "bird scare" products include iridescent reflective foil or flash tape, which create an "Optical Distraction Zone" for pest pigeons. Another low-cost visual bird scare device is the inflatable balloon imprinted with lifelike reflective predator eyes and markings. These bird repellers or scare-eye diverters are easy to hang in problem areas. Some bird repellers have iridescent foil eyes to scare away pigeons by day and glow-in-the-dark backsides to keep them away at night. They keep pigeons from landing on trees, overhangs, gazebos, patios, eaves, pool areas, and other areas.

Still another low-cost pigeon deterrent is bird gel, which creates a sticky surface that pest birds hate. Bird Gel is ideal for ledges, parapet walls, pipes, and flat or curved surfaces. A fast and easy way to control pigeon infestation, this non-toxic, sticky substance leaves a surface that's tacky and uncomfortable to pigeons. The gel skins but never sets hard, yielding an unstable surface for the pigeons to land on.

Tiling the roof

Tiling the roof is definitely not a DIY project for the faint of heart. But it doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. For a medium-sized, low-lying home built of traditional stone, you will need around 800 to 900 tiles.

The first step in tiling (or retiling) a roof is by laying down the tough planks of wood that would be handling the weight of the concrete and the clay tiles. These are called tile batons. The length will vary depending on the entire length of your house.

Tile batons may be placed over the concrete fixings of the old roof, given that the clay tiles have already been removed completely. The tile batons provide a so-called "breathable membrane" that allows for ventilation to take place.

Laying down the tiles

Be careful in using tall ladders when tiling your roof. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents: "220,000 DIY daredevils have to go to the hospital for treatment for cuts, breaks, falls, concussions after their handy dandy activities go wrong."

Now, if you think you’re fairly safe up on your roof, begin the laying down of the tiles. The concrete or the cement should be placed between the gaps of the baton as well as on top. Fill the spaces completely before placing the tiles.

Work from the bottom of the roof toward the top. This way, you won’t have to worry about accidentally destroying the tiles you’ve laid down. Also, work vertically, column after column. This way, you can easily remove the clay tiles if something goes wrong.

The cement or concrete fillings should be even especially on the side of the roof. Imagine making a sandwich- you wipe off excess sauce on the side of the slices of bread to make the sandwich more appetizing. This applies to tiles- because a badly tiled roof is not really pretty to look at.

Does the advertising make a lot of claims that are hard to believe? Do they promise to solve all of your problems for a small, one-time "fee?" These nutrients, combined with sunlight, cause the plants to grow and release oxygen into the water in a process known as photosynthesis. When fish are introduced, they consume the oxygen produced by the plants. To some measure, the fish rely on the plants as a source of food, and so keep excessive growth of the plants in check. In turn, the fish provide nutrients (carbon dioxide through breathing and nitrogen from fish wastes) to promote plant growth. Scavengers such as snails and tadpoles also help balance the pond by consuming excess fish food, algae, and organic debris. When the numbers of fish and plants in the pond are stabilized (not too many of one or the other), the pond is in biological balance. The reason balanced ponds are relatively clear is because the plants and fish in tandem help control the algae growth that can turn the water cloudy.

Controlling Algae When you first add water to your pond or water fountain, it will be crystal clear. After a few days, however, the water will turn murky, taking on a greenish tinge. This is caused by microscopic single-celled free-floating algae. Unless you take measures to control these creatures, you will end up with pea soup.

Starting the Process To achieve an initial balance in a new pond, follow these procedures:

Testing the Water When you first fill the pond with water, it may contain chemical and mineral pollutants that are toxic to fish and plants. The chemicals include chlorine, chlorine dioxide, chloramines, ammonia, and others present in tap water. Also included are various pollutants from pond-building materials, and poisonous chemicals that may have been washed or blown into the water from outside sources. Free chlorine in tap water usually dissipates after the water has stood for a few days. Other chemicals, such as a combination of chlorine and ammonia, take much longer to break down. Before introducing plants or fish to the pond, test the water. After filling the pond, wait at least one week before testing. You can detect the presence of most toxic substances in water by testing for pH, ammonia, chloramines, nitrites, and water hardness. The pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity. The scale ranges from 0 (highly acid) to 14 (highly alkaline), with 7 being neutral (indicating pure water). Healthy pond water ranges in pH from 6.5 to 8.5 Water-testing kits are available to test one or all of the conditions above. You can buy these kits at pet shops, garden suppliers, and pond dealers. Or you can order them from water-garden catalogs. The kit instructions usually tell you which water conditioners to use to correct the problem. Some pond dealers and pet shops also provide comprehensive water-testing services, and can advise you on proper treatment.

Correcting Water Conditions A variety of water-conditioning treatments are available to balance the pH and remove toxic substances from ponds. But you should use them only if tests indicate that they are needed. Test the water for pH and presence of chlorine, ammonia, and other toxic substances. Simple tests kits for monitoring water quality are available at pet shops and water garden suppliers or your favorite online dealer. If necessary add a water conditioner to remove chlorine and other harmful chemicals in the water. Follow label directions. If algae is present, treat the water with algaecide. Remove leaves and other debris from the pond with a leaf skimmer.

7 Tips to Clean Mold in Fabrics

1. Start Immediately
Before even fathoming cleaning mildew or mold, determine whether it's possible. If the mold has been sitting there for days, it's probably too late. Mold and mildew removal is something that should be taken care of as soon as possible. The sooner you start, the better chance you have of removing it all.

2. Dress Appropriately

3. Remove Visible Mold

4. Vacuum

5. Dry

6. Clean it Up
After the textile is fully dry, you can clean it. For mold and mildew you need more than a regular cleaner, because you also need to kill germ spores in addition to just cleaning it off. Using a non-chlorine bleach is usually best for this. Mix 2 tablespoons of bleach with 1 quart of warm water. Let the mixture sit on stain for at least 10 minutes before rinsing off. If necessary, repeat. Be sure not to use this bleach mix on wool, silk, or any other textile the bottle advises against.

7. Test it
After you've done all steps, take a good look at the area and be sure you've got it all out. There should be no dark spots from the previous stain, and no discoloration from the cleaning process. The item should also be without any musty smell. Unfortunately, some items will not be able to clean out fully, and some mold stains are worse than others. Use good judgment as to whether the item is still safe to keep in your home.

Plumbing Problems You Can Fix yourself

Problems with sinks, drains, faucets, and other parts of the household plumbing circuits are a major cause of household repair bills. So, let’s start with that persistent “drip, drip, drip” from a leaky faucet. Most faucet leaks are caused by a worn-out washer (rubber or synthetic ring inside the faucet), or o-rings and corroded valve seats. Besides the irritation, a worn-out washer is a source of wasted water and higher water bills. What to do?

First, you must find a way to shut off the water flow to the sink. Usually there is a valve underneath the sink that will do this. If not, there is a main water valve into the house, and temporarily you can shut the whole water supply off.

Then remove the screw that holds the faucet handle in place and lift it off. Underneath this is a “bonnet” or cap nut on which you will have to use a wrench to remove it. (Wrap a cloth or tape around chrome fittings to prevent damage from wrenches.) Now you can lift out the “spindle” (shaft going down into the faucet). Looking at the end of the spindle, you will see a rubber or fiber washer held in place by a screw. Remove this washer and replace it with a new one. They are cheap at hardware stores; it is best to buy them several at a time and have them in the house.

After putting it back together, what if it still drips? Go to a hardware store and get what is called a valve-seat cutter or seating tool can also be used to resurface a worn seat. Again remove the spindle. Looking into the body of the valve—at the bottom—you will see its base or “seat.” Using the directions you get with the seating tool, grind away the nicks in the “seat” so that it is smooth. Those nicks let water through, causing the drip. Now that the washer and seat can fit tight against each other, your problem should be solved.

To repair some single-lever faucets, you will probably need to purchase a repair kit for that particular brand.

Another frequent plumbing problem is clogged drains or a clogged toilet. These are caused by hair, animal fat from food, bits of vegetable peel, combs, bobby pins, and so forth. Frequently you are very near the problem, for the clogging is usually in the “trap,” the curved portion of the pipe below the sink, or in the body of the toilet itself.

There are many chemicals marketed to unclog drains, and some persons feel that the convenience of using them makes them worth while. However, many contain concentrated caustic dangerous to the skin. Most authorities feel that, in the long run, mechanical means of unclogging are better for you and for your pipes. They advise you first to try your “plumber’s friend”—the rubber plunger. Simply put it over the drain, covering the plunger with water for best results. (Also close the overflow vent in the sink if it has one.) Work the tool vigorously and deliberately. Give it about ten strokes, then allow the water to run off. Try this approach several times.

If this does not unclog the drain, you will have to resort to using a “snake” or drain auger. This is simply a long, flexible, twisted steel wire. Push the steel in as far as it will go, and usually with a little persistence you can unblock the drain or toilet.

If this doesn`t work then you`ll probably need to resort to the use of chemicals in some form.
